Brune Park Litteraction
Friday, 11th of May 2012

Congratulations to all students who represented their House on Friday 27 April 2012 in our Litteraction event. We never imagined to see students in hedges and bushes! It was a fantastic afternoon. We now need to continue with all of the good work that we have started.

Tara Fisher of Litteraction has asked me to me to pass on this message:

" The afternoon of Litteraction at Brune Park Community College was excellent. The students were excellent . Members of the School Council greeted the Mayor and took him on a guided tour of the school. They then were very good hosts at the tea and biscuits afterwards. The school threw itself into the whole event with great enthusiasm and members of the teams discussed ideas with members of Gosport Council who were there to support the school. Our Brockhurst Litteraction Group representatives were very impressed by the students' attitudes and keenness and felt that the whole afternoon was a great success."

Once again thank you to all staff and students involved.

The University of Southampton Learn with US exhibition
Monday, 30th of April 2012

The University of Southampton Learn with US exhibition

We currently have 15 students working with The University of Southampton as part of their Learn with US programme. Over the last term the students have been working with their University mentors on a project to produce a display for an exhibition. Over the 3 days the students represented the school well with their team work, professionalism and enthusiasm. During the exhibition on Day 2 the students that were representing Brune Park Community College were required to create a 'concept university'. Against 13 other schools across the county our students won.

Day 1: Joshua Hatcher, Stephen Dight, Danielle Anthony, Megan McRobbie (and Bethany McKinney who was unable to attend the exhibition)

Day 2: Rebecca Francis, Dana Smith, Paige Blackstock, Hayley Newell (and Dan Ward who was unable to attend the exhibition)

Day 3: Bethanie Hill and Eloise Ruddick (Ellie Gammon, Heather Jones and Stanley Richardson were unable to attend the exhibition)

Spirit of Adventure
Thursday, 26th of April 2012

Congratulations to all those students that lived up to the Brune Park's House System "SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE". Dozens have been away on 5 day sailing trips to the Isle of Wight, the West Country and France with the Ocean Youth Trust, and Rona Sailing Trust. They aim to give young people from all backgrounds the fun, adventure and self discipline of going to sea under sail. All of that, and at no cost to the students or their families.

Student comment from Paige Goulder 8LFUL

Sailing
Sailing is one of the best things I have ever been lucky enough to experience. I made some great friends and will never forget the people I met. We went to Cowes, Weymouth, Poole, Yarmouth and then back to where we started. One of the best experiences had to be driving the boat through the English channel in the pitch black that is something that will stick with me forever. At Weymouth (which was our main destination) we were lucky enough to go on the sandy beach where Paige Curtis and I were the only ones to go in the sea! The weather was great which was a bonus! I would recommend this to anybody, the sea staff were great! I can't wait for next time.

Young Roots Heritage Film Project 2011
Thursday, 19th of April 2012

In July ten Year 9/10 students from Brune Park worked with Ashcroft Arts Centre for the 'Young Roots Heritage Film Project' which involved students from local schools working on a specific theme with both staff from the centre and professional film company CASS Productions to create a film which was shown during the festival week at Ashcroft in July.

The theme was 'Local Stories' and the Brune Park students created a short film based on the life of Charlie Port who was a patient and employee of Knowle Hospital. It was a success with a number of Brune Park students receiving awards during the 'Awards Evening' which took place at the end of the festival. The Brune Park team also won the prestigious award of 'Best Teamwork' which led to both Joel Fresle (Year 10) and Jay Moxham (Year 10) being selected to attend a Parliamentary celebration event for the 'Young Roots' 10 year anniversary in London held by the Heritage Lottery Fund. I am very proud of what the students achieved and the fact some had the amazing opportunity of representing both Ashcroft Arts Centre and Brune Park Community College at a Parliamentary celebration.

Fairtrade takes 470 steps at Brune Park...
Monday, 16th of April 2012

The theme of this years Fairtrade fortnight was Take a Step in 2012, during which everyone was encouraged to take one extra step and try a new Fairtrade product.

320 Year 7 students had lessons on Fairtrade, sampled Fairtrade chocolate and made Dinosteps, hundreds of which went up around the college and in classrooms. Some of the Dinosteps formed part of a quiz in which students had to go round and find 10 questions and 10 answers about Fairtrade. The winner was the first to find all 20 and match them up - Year 9's Jamie Robb, who won a bag full of chocolate donated by the Co-op.

The Year 7s also had a special assembly with visitors from Palestine, two olive farmers who work with Zaytoun to market their Fairtrade olive oil, almonds, olives and sundried tomatoes in Britain. One year 7 class heard in detail about the problems the farmers face and asked questions to learn more about their daily lives.

Members of the Fairtrade group were given permission to wear new Fairtrade Tshirts for the fortnight and went round talking to fellow students, giving out badges and leaflets. They also put up posters around the college and sold Fairtrade goods every break in the library and at the Year 8 Parents evening.

In the second week, all tea, coffee and decaf sold to staff and used for visitors was Fairtrade. There was a tasting form for coffee drinkers to fill in each day, on which they could score their favourite coffees, the preferred choice of the week being CafeDirect. The Co-op helped fund these tastings too, along with a few sample bars of Fairtrade chocolate.

In all Brune Park logged 470 steps on the Fairtrade Foundation website, helping towards a national target of 1,500,000 steps.

Brune Park Ballers' Finish Season on a High!
Friday, 30th of March 2012

As a reward for their commitment on the Court the Year 11 Basketball Team were given the opportunity to watch the famous Harlem Globetrotters at Wembley Arena on Monday 26th March.

The boys had a fantastic night enjoying the incredible basketball skills and fun & games and all of the students were an absolute credit to the school and themselves.

The trip was arranged due to the exceptional commitment that the boys have shown to the school Basketball Team since Year 9. They have attended school training throughout the Winter months and have provided the core of the newly established Gosport Basketball Team who have had an extremely successful season defeating many teams from across the county.

All of the students have shown a dramatic improvement in their skills which is demonstrated as the side progressed from winning just 1 game in Year 9 to losing just 1 game this year, the pick of the results a 43-24 victory against Crofton School, a reverse of a similar defeat from the year before.

The Year 11 Basketball Team were:

Adam Lissenden
Alex Paget
Connor Jennings
Dan Wood
David Lewis
Denton Bedding
Ieuan Grady
Jack Chandler
Jay Hayward
Jordan Walker
Laurence Ali
Matt Garrett
Oli Noble

Many of the boys are planning to continue their Basketball education Post-16 and we would like to take the opportunity to wish them every success with their Basketball careers and beyond.

Philosophy for Children Evening
Monday, 26th of March 2012

Tuesday 20 March 2012

A group of Year 8 students and their parents thoroughly enjoyed the recent Philosophy for Children (P4C) evening run by the Religious Studies Department.

Since introducing this increasingly popular teaching method the department has seen improvements in the ability of pupils to express, analyse and critically evaluate their own and other’s points of view and opinions. This is already leading to improvements in the overall standard of written work being submitted across both KS3 and KS4.

This is what some of the parents had to say,

“To see what RS can do for my children’s career choices will make me encourage them to take the subject”

“A good insight into the current teaching methods giving our children a voice. Wish we did this!”

“My son had already decided to take RS as one of his options but tonight has filled him with even more enthusiasm!”

Following the success of this event it is hoped to run more P4C evenings in the near future. If you are interested in finding out more about P4C at Brune Park Community College please contact ebrackpool@brunepark.co.uk
